Discussion:
Word 2010 Beta Spell Check - doesn't work
(too old to reply)

I am running Word 2010 beta on XP. No other versions of Word are running
side by side. Spell check stopped working yesterday. On startup yesterday,
I did get a message that a dll was missing or couldn't be loaded (but NO,
just like all of the people in here in the office that I support, I didn't
write down the message).

I have tried:

repairing from add programs

confirmed that the english proofing tools are set to run form my computer
through add programs

checked that the check while you type box is selected;

confirmed that the document status bar shows spelling and grammar being
checked

checked in addins for something that looked like a disabled spell checker -
nothing there

checked in manage com addins for anything that looked like a disabled spell
checker.

Any suggestions as to how to reinstall the spell checker would be
appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

And if you did all that, I assume you also confirmed that the language at
the insertion point is one for which you have proofing tools?

Suzanne,

Thank you for the response. Yes I did check the langauge. Here is some
more information I probably should have included in the first post. Spell
check had worked before yesterday morning. I was trying to print a final
document for a meeting and our network contractor chose that exact moment to
pull the plug on the network switches. Word locked up - never responsed
once the network switches were turned back on. I had to do a forced
shutdown of word. I then rebooted the computer and on the restart of Word I
got the dll message and spell check hasn't worked since.

My guess is that I have a corrupted file that needs to be replaced, but I
don't know which one. My other alternative is to completely uninstall
Office 2010 and reinstall, which I would like to avoid - I couldn't do it
until after the close of business today. But, if its the only choice ....

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

Actually, I was surprised to see my message, as I thought I had deleted it
before sending, but I guess not! I suspect that your assessment of the
problem is correct, but if so, a repair install should suffice.

I did a full unistall/install - didn't solve the problem.

I then tried opening word in safe mode. When I ran spell check in safe
mode, grammar was checked but not spelling.

I finally did resolve the problem and I'll pass the solution along in case
anyone else has this problem - but caution people to use this approach at
your own risk.

exit
run regedit
go to hkey_current_user | software | microsoft | shared tools | proofing
tools | 1.0
right click on the 1.0 folder
rename the folder (I used 1.0test)
exit regedit
restart word

The first time working in a document was a little slow as the folder was
rebuilt, but everything seems to work. I reran regedit and a new folder 1.0
has been produced. Spell check works fine, including check as you type.

could you please give me more detailed instructions. I am having a similar problem.
Post by Gary Haugen
I am running Word 2010 beta on XP. No other versions of Word are running
side by side. Spell check stopped working yesterday. On startup yesterday,
I did get a message that a dll was missing or could not be loaded (but NO,
just like all of the people in here in the office that I support, I did not
write down the message).
repairing from add programs
confirmed that the english proofing tools are set to run form my computer
through add programs
checked that the check while you type box is selected;
confirmed that the document status bar shows spelling and grammar being
checked
checked in addins for something that looked like a disabled spell checker -
nothing there
checked in manage com addins for anything that looked like a disabled spell

I then rebooted the computer and on the restart of Word I
got the dll message and spell check has not worked since.
My guess is that I have a corrupted file that needs to be replaced, but I
do not know which one. My other alternative is to completely uninstall
Office 2010 and reinstall, which I would like to avoid - I could not do it
until after the close of business today. But, if its the only choice ....
Thanks again for your time and consideration.

Actually, I was surprised to see my message, as I thought I had deleted it
before sending, but I guess not! I suspect that your assessment of the
problem is correct, but if so, a repair install should suffice.

I did a full unistall/install - did not solve the problem.
I then tried opening word in safe mode. When I ran spell check in safe
mode, grammar was checked but not spelling.
I finally did resolve the problem and I will pass the solution along in case
anyone else has this problem - but caution people to use this approach at
your own risk.
exit
run regedit
go to hkey_current_user | software | microsoft | shared tools | proofing
tools | 1.0
right click on the 1.0 folder
rename the folder (I used 1.0test)
exit regedit
restart word
The first time working in a document was a little slow as the folder was
rebuilt, but everything seems to work. I reran regedit and a new folder 1.0
has been produced. Spell check works fine, including check as you type.

I am glad you found a solution.
