There is another cause for this message. Word 2000 - and I
suspect later versions - don't check the footer in your
document. This generates the message and so far I've been
unable to suppress it.
There is the added disadvantage that the presence of text
in a footer area replaces & suppresses the readability
statistics from the body of the document - unless someone
out there knows of a way round this. The only solution
I've found so far is highlighting the body and checking
that separately which is a time-waster.

After running spell check in Word 2002 I get a message
The Spelling Check is Complete.
Text marked with "Do not check spelling or grammar" was
skipped.
How does text get marked to not be checked? More
specifically, how can this
be removed?

Final note, the "do not check" attribute is equivalent to a font formatting
attribute. That is why you were told to select the entire document before
making the change. It only applies to the area you have selected.
